It all began with a simple idea and a whole lot of enthusiasm.
Our founder, Steve, had been retired since April 2023 and was looking for a way to combine his love of mountain biking with giving back to the community. He came across the Cycling Without Age initiative and was hooked.
As Steve famously told the first group of volunteers:
"I am new to getting something like this running and certainly no expert, but I'm super keen and can't wait to see smiling happy faces returning from their Trishaw rides!
He put the call out to the Redlands community, and the response was overwhelming. So many people pledged their time and expertises in getting our new local chapter up and running.
While one passionate local took the initial lead, it quickly became clear they weren't riding alone.
The Pioneers: Dedicated volunteers stepped up immediately to fill crucial roles like Treasurer and Secretary. Soon after, an enthusiastic team of Pilots, Scouts, and Ride Assistants joined the ranks.
The Mentors: We owe a massive thank you to the Gold Coast Chapter. They didn’t just offer advice; their team physically brought a 2-seat trishaw and a wheelchair trishaw up to Raby Bay Marina for our very first meeting so we could see the magic in person.
The Supporters: From early believers like Cavalier Containers, Cafe Chieti and and Sixth Insight to everyone who raised their hand for a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle induction (the true rite of passage for any Aussie volunteer!), this has been a community effort from Day One.
The Donators: Thanks to the rapid and generous response from our community, we were able to quickly secure our first two trishaws.
Elspeth: Donated in honour of a volunteer's mother, Elspeth, who loved riding the paths around England after the war ❤️
Rosie: Generously donated by a community member in honour of his sister Rosie after hearing an interview on the local radio, BayFM. ❤️
Why do we do it? The answer is simple.
It’s about connection. It’s about taking someone who might be isolated and giving them back their freedom. It’s about that moment when a passenger ("Co-Pilot") tells us a story about the street we are riding down, a story that would have been lost if we hadn't taken the time to listen.
Steve often shares a video called "A 95-Year-Old Returns to his Most Beloved Place" as the perfect example of why we exist. It’s not just a bike ride; it’s a joyride through memory lane.
Learning the Ropes
We take safety seriously. Our pilots undergo specific training because, as Steve learned during his training sessions at Paradise Point, riding a Trishaw is a little different than a standard bike! We ensure every ride is safe, slow, and comfortable.
Join the Ride
We are always looking for more hands on deck. Whether you want to be a Pilot (pedalling the bike), a Scout (riding ahead for safety), a Ride Assistant (the welcoming committee), or just help us with grant writing and "tax-free" roles like Secretary, there is a spot for you.
Together, we are making Redlands Coast a place where everyone can enjoy the ride.
